CAGD WORKSHOP: Bergen--Tromso, June 24--30, 2004
Abstracts
General Information
Larry Schumaker is organizing a workshop to take place
aboard the MS Polarlys, leaving Bergen, Norway on June 24 at
20:00 and arriving in Kirkenes at 10:00 on June 30. Participants
can get off in Tromso on June 28, or continue to Kirkenes with
a flight back to Tromso on the 30th in time for the
Tromso Conference on Mathematical Methods for Curves and Surfaces
which begins July 1.
Boat Reservations
Call Norwegian Costal Voyage in NY to make your
individual reservations. Mention the Vanderbilt Workshop
and the dates.
Before calling, you should
decide whether you want the 4 night or 6 night option,
and decide on date and times of flights. You will be
asked for a credit card to make a $100 deposit per person.
It is refundable up until March 24, 2004.
We only have 10 reserved cabins, so I suggest getting
your reservation in as soon as possible, especially
if you want a specific category of cabin.

OPTION 1: We will sail from Bergen at 20:00
on 24 June. The boat arrives in Tromso at 14:30 on 28 June.
We have the following space reserved (all double cabins):
K2- (double outside) 1385.00 per person
P2- (double outside) 1250.00 per person
N2- (double outside) 1175.00 per person
I2- (double inside) 1045.00 per person
These prices include 3 meals per day, taxes, and port charges.
They can book you a one-way flight from Tromso to Oslo for $250
per person.
OPTION 2: The second option is to stay on the boat for the remainder
of the trip North, and arrive in Kirkenes at 10:00 on 30 June.
In this case the prices are
K2- $1933.00 per person
P2- $1881.00 per person
N2- $1729.00 per person
I2- $1364.00 per person
In this case, they will book you a one-way flight from Kirkenes to
Tromso on 30 June, and a one-way flight from Tromso to Oslo afer
the conference. The total air fare will be $295.
The prices are slightly lower for three people in a cabin. For
the Kirkenes option, they are K = $1646, P = $1602, N = $1472,
and I = $1162, per person.
The Kirkenes option costs more, but remember that if you get off in
Tromso on June 28, you will have 2 nights in a hotel there
and 2 days of meals. The conference hotel will give conference
rates (1050 NOK for a double).
If you are going all the way to Kirkenes,
you can save $70/cabin if you belong
to AARP. Ask for it if you are a member.
Train Reservations
If you are flying into Oslo, you can either fly to Bergen
or take the train. I've taken the train, and it goes through
some nice scenery. You can leave Oslo at 08:11 and get to
Bergen at 14:35. There is also an earlier train at 06:31.
We sail at 20:00 according to my brochure.
Be sure to verify all these times for yourself. You can reserve
the train online by going to www.raileurope.com. The adult
ticket seems to be $86. If you have not been to Bergen before,
you might want to consider going a day or two earlier and possibly
getting off the train for a boat tour of one of Norway's nicest
Fjords.
Program
All participants are urged to make a presentation at the
workshop. A call for titles and abstracts will follow
at a later date.
