Graduate Fellowships in

Noncommutative Geometry

Department of Mathematics

Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee

Several Graduate Fellowships in Noncommutative Geometry will be awarded beginning fall 2006 to students pursuing a Ph.D. degree in mathematics with an interest in noncommutative geometry.

Fellows receive an 11-month stipend of $21,000, an allowance of $1,500 for research related travel and a full tuition waiver.

The fellowships are made possible through a Research Training Group grant from the National Science Foundation to the research group in Noncommutative Geometry and Operator Algebras in the Department of Mathematics at Vanderbilt University. Professors Dietmar Bisch, Alain Connes, Bruce Hughes, Gennadi Kasparov and Guoliang Yu are the principal investigators for the grant.

The research group in Noncommutative Geometry and Operator Algebras consists of faculty members, postdocs, visitors and graduate students with scientific interests in noncommutative geometry, the theory of subfactors, von Neumann algebras, K-theory of operator algebras, operator theory, coarse geometry, index theory, analysis on manifolds, controlled topology, stratified spaces, harmonic analysis, quantum computing and quantum information theory. The group organizes seminars, workshops and a yearly Spring Institute consisting of an international conference and a school featuring several mini-courses taught by leading experts.

Fellows will have supervised teaching responsibilities during one of their residency years. In addition to taking a course of studies leading to a Ph.D., fellows will participate in the seminars, workshops and Spring Institute organized by the Noncommutative Geometry and Operator Algebras research group.

All U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a bachelor's degree in mathematics or related field are eligible to apply. Students interested in studying noncommutative geometry, but otherwise not eligible for these fellowships, are encouraged to apply for other fellowships and teaching assistantships offered through the Department of Mathematics at Vanderbilt University.

To be considered for these fellowships, follow the usual application procedure for admission to graduate studies in mathematics at Vanderbilt University. Be sure to indicate on your application that you are applying for a Graduate Fellowship in Noncommutative Geometry and let Professor Bisch know of your intention.
