Sources of information
- R is a very powerful piece of statistical software. It has
been used widely at universities, in medical research and in
industry.
- R Website
- Download the software. It's available for Linux, Mac, and PC.
- The Drunkard's walk by Leonard Mlodinow. This popular science book gives an excellent introduction to probability and statistics. It presents the history of the subject, mentions common fallacies and ends on a rather philosophical note. Amazon | Google books
- US Census data is available at http://www.census.gov/
- The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, by Edward R. Tufte. This is a beautiful book. Filled with information about graphic design in relation to the presentation of statistical data. Amazon | Google books
- How big is one trillion? In order to understand data, we need a sense of the relative size of numbers. This is why a percentage (which is always out of 100) is easier to relate to, and easier to comprehend, than an actual data value. Here is a link to the BBC news website, where they demonstrate the relative sizes of one, one thousand, one million, one billion and one trillion. The page is designed to help people understand the size of the budget deficit; I think it also helps us understand the relative size of numbers. It's fun to search for the places mentioned (they are primarily in Manchester, England) on google maps so that you can see for yourself how large they are.
