Dear colleagues,

Information on meeting registration and local accommodations for the AMS meeting in Santa Barbara (March 11 and 12, 2000) has been published in the January 2000 issue of the Notices (you can find this information also on the web at http://www.ams.org/amsmtgs/sectional.html). As you probably know, it is customary that all speakers and participants make their own arrangements for accommodations. The AMS proposes the following hotels (ask for the UCSB discount when you make the reservation):

Holiday Inn, 5650 Calle Real, Goleta. Tel (805) 964-6241. Price: $89
Motel 6, 5897 Calle Real, Goleta. Tel (805) 964-3596. Price: $59
Ramada Limited, 4770 Calle Real, Goleta. Tel. (805) 964-3511. Price: $85

Here are the hotels/motels that the math department often uses (prices are estimates):

Super 8 Motel, 6021 Holister Ave, Goleta. Tel (805) 967-5591. Price: $50
Best Western South Coast Inn, 5620 Calle Real. Tel (805) 967-3200. Price: $80
El Prado Inn, 1601 State St., Santa Barbara. Tel. (805) 966-0807. Price: $70

Note that there are no hotels/motels in walking distance of the campus. The Best Western has a shuttle service to campus (not too regular though... ask about it when you make a reservation). The El Prado Inn is located in downtown Santa Barbara, in walking distance to many restaurants and bars. There is an express bus that goes from downtown SB to campus (distance is approx. 10 miles). The El Prado usually gives a special discount for the mathematics department (ask for it, when you make the reservation) - it is the hotel that we use most frequently.

You can find further information about the meeting and/or Santa Barbara on the web (e.g. a list of speakers) at

http://www.math.ucsb.edu/~bisch/list_ams_subf_and_fp00.html

It is usually a very good idea to reserve a room in Santa Barbara at least a month ahead of time, since the hotels in Santa Barbara fill up pretty quickly, especially on week-ends. In addtion, the International Film Festival will be held in Santa Barbara from March 4 to 17 and the city expects lots of visitors in that period!
