How to Use the Scanner

Version of 4 Feb 2005, by Eric Schechter. These instructions are for the ScanJet 5300C in room SC-1427, which is presently hooked up to a Dell computer running Windows XP.

0.   First, check to see that the scanner is powered up: Lift the lid and see if the scanner's lamp is on. If the lamp is not on, unplug the power wire (black, round plug) from the back of the scanner, and then plug it in again; the lamp should go on. -- If the instructions below don't work right, check to make sure that all four wire ends (both ends of the power cable and both ends of the usb cable) are plugged in properly.

1. Start up Irfan View.
2. Go to "File" menu, then "Select TWAIN Source".
3. Select the "WIA-Hewlett-Packard Scanjet 5300C 1.0".

4. [Repeat section begins here.] Insert document in scanner.

5. Go to "File" menu, then "Acquire".
6. Adjust settings. You may need to try a few different settings to find the ones you want. Then click "Scan".
7. Use IrfanView's various abilities, to adjust the picture to your liking. (Or skip this step.) You may want to experiment with IrfanView, to find out what it can do.

8. Click on "File" "Save as" to save your picture as a file.

9. Specify the file directory. (I recommend the desktop, because it's easy to fine.) Specify the filetype -- IrfanView can handle many different filetypes; you may have to experiment to decide which one is best for your needs. I usually recommend JPG for color photographs, and GIF for pictures with less color (e.g., cartoons, drawings, black-and-white or grayscale images). Both of those filetypes can be viewed on any web browser. Give a name to your file. Then click "Save".

10. Repeat the previous steps for each image.

11. Use floppy disks or a zip disk or FTP to copy your files to another computer.
